Supporters of the Friends of the Library-Germantown Chapter will gather Saturday night for a gala celebration to honor the new Germantown Library, which opened its doors to visitors in early March. The gala, themed ‘‘A Celebration of Our Community,” will raise money for Friends of the Library-Germantown Chapter community programs.
The event is 7 to 10 p.m. at the library, 19840 Century Blvd., Germantown.
The event will feature entertainment, heavy hors d ‘oeuvres and desserts.
A portion of the $50 ticket cost is tax-deductible.

There will be guided tours of the building, which is set in the heart of Germantown Town Center.

The Friends of the Library-Germantown will host its first used book sale from 9 a.m. to noon April 21 at the library, 19840 Century Blvd.

A family day celebration is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the new Germantown Library, 19840 Century Blvd.
The schedule of events is as follows: at 1 p.m. a Chinese Lion Dance will bring good luck to the library. At 1:45 p.m. Boyds teen poet Claire LaFleur will speak about her writing. From 2 to 4 p.m. join Mr. Geo and learn to draw your own Manga.
At 2 p.m. there will be children’s book readings.
At 3 p.m. listen to stories told by the Twinbrook Tellers or listen to Frank Cassell, ‘‘The Banjo Man.”
At 4 p.m., Kathy Thompson, of Follow Your Heart Yoga, will lead yoga and meditation.
Ongoing activities include a scavenger hunt and a craft, learn to fold your own book. For more information, call the library at 240-777-0110.
Benefit concert
Tammy Hyson, 39, of Damascus lost her battle against breast cancer Monday, however, at press time Tuesday, organizers said they expect a benefit concert planned for Saturday will still go on.
Children’s musician Billy B and others will perform in the benefit concert at 6 p.m. at to raise money for the Tammy Hyson Healing Fund.
Hyson was the wife of Flower Hill Elementary School fourth-grade teacher and children’s musician Leroy Hyson.
The family will still require money to pay expenses incurred, and concert organizer Annie Ahmet expected Tuesday the benefit would go on.
Doctors told Tammy Hyson that her best hope for treatment was at The Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s eastern regional hospital in Philadelphia. Thanks to donations, Hyson was admitted to that hospital in late February.
Her funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Redeemer, 19425 Woodfield Road in Gaithersburg.
The concert will be at Forest Oak Middle School, 651 Saybrooke Oaks Blvd., Gaithersburg. Tickets are $5 per child under 12, $12 per adult or $25 per family. Refreshments will be sold. For more information, call Ahmet at 240-460-2456.

Bring the kids back to nature with the Children’s Spin Fishing for Trout Clinic on April 4.
It’s from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Izaak Walton League Pond, located at 707 Conservation Lane in Gaithersburg.
Attendance is free, but reservations are required. They are available at www.parkpass.org, course number 31258.
Participants ages 16 and older must have a Maryland fishing license and a trout stamp to possess trout. Loaner rods are available, as are refreshments.

Flea markets for history
The Germantown Historical Society’s monthly flea markets begin at 8 a.m. April 7 at the MARC train parking lot at Route 118 and Bowman Mill Drive in Germantown. The flea market will be open until 1 p.m.

Spring break camps
Sign up for camp and basketball training at Plum Gar Community Center, 19561 Scenery Drive, Germantown. The camps will be offered 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 2 to April 6. Cost is $70 per child.
